Venice and Istanbul

"Contribution to Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture"

INTRODUCTION

This activity, planned to contribute to the "Istanbul - European Capital of Culture - 2010" Project, strives to show the close ties between Europe and Turkey, through relations between Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire, revealing Venice's role as a bridge between the Islamic and Christian worlds, and showing the similarities between these cultures despite the religious, political and social differences. To this end a series of conferences and educational programmes were held with an accompanying exhibition.

CONFERENCES

The scientific conferences were held in 2010, during which 6 lecturers addressed visitors, scholars, students and experts. These conferences provided the opportunity for all visitors as well as experts and professionals in the related fields to learn more about the content as well as the context of the exhibition.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

Educational programmes and workshops for school children between the ages of 5 and 17 took place 6 days a week, twice a day, during the entire duration of the exhibition in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Istanbul. These workshops were essential in drawing a younger audience to the museum and establishing a link between the younger visitors and culturally more complex issues. A special book addressing children has been another original output of the activity. Guided tours were organized for the exhibition in the Sakip Sabanci Museum. These programs allowed the people to feel connected with the exhibition and improve their knowledge in the field while expanding the visitors' historical knowledge and intercultural awareness.

EXHIBITION

An exhibition of Venetian and Ottoman objects and works of art were exhibited as the center-piece of the activity. The exhibition highlighted the close links between these two cultures in spite of their differences in religious, political, social and cultural origins.
